Pattern Inspiration & Design Notes

Whether you are decorating your home for the autumn season or crafting gifts for friends, this pattern was designed from the ground up for relaxation and clean, crisp stitch definition.

One of the most common frustrations in crochet is vague sizing or running out of yarn right at the final row. That is why every stitch in this tutorial has been physically crocheted, swatch-tested, and audited with our designated 3.5 mm (US E/4) hook.

Gauge & Tension Calibration

Standard Swatch: 20 hdc x 16 rows = 4 inches (10 cm) using Half Double Crochet (hdc) in the Round with your designated 3.5 mm (US E/4) hook.

Gauge accuracy is essential for correct baby foot sizing; work a small test sole first.

Important Pattern Notes

  • Strict 3.5mm Hook Consistency: Do not alter hook size between sole and cuff to preserve exact bootie balance.
  • Worked in One Seamless Piece: Sole, sides, instep toe, and ankle cuff flow continuously with zero sewing.
  • Joined Rounds: Join each round with a slip stitch to the first stitch (not the chain-1).
  • Folded Rib Cuff: Worked in alternating Front Post and Back Post double crochet for elastic stay-put grip.
  • Always Make A Pair: Follow identical stitch counts on both booties so length matches down to the millimeter.

Step-by-Step Instructions

Step 1Stitches: 32 hdc at end of sole

Seamless Oval Sole (Rounds 1-3)

Crocheting the oval sole around both sides of the center foundation chain
Step 1: Work around both sides of foundation chain to form a flat oval sole

With 3.5mm hook, chain 11 (for 0-3 Months size).

Round 1: 2 hdc in 3rd ch from hook. 1 hdc in next 7 ch. 5 hdc in last ch (toe curve). Rotate to work down opposite side: 1 hdc in next 7 ch, 2 hdc in starting ch space. Sl st to 1st hdc. (23 sts).

Round 2: Ch 1, 2 hdc in next 2 sts. 1 hdc in next 7 sts. 2 hdc in next 5 sts (toe). 1 hdc in next 7 sts, 2 hdc in last 2 sts. Sl st to 1st hdc. (32 sts).

Round 3: Ch 1, 1 hdc in each st around. Sl st to join. (32 sts). Sole should measure 3.5 inches long.

Pro Tip: Count your stitches at the end of Round 2. Having exactly 32 stitches guarantees your toe decreases will center symmetrically.
Step 2Stitches: 32 sts

Foot Walls & Height (Rounds 4-5)

Working the upright sides of the crochet baby bootie
Step 2: Single crochet in Back Loop Only to turn the sole into vertical shoe walls

Round 4 (Sole Ridge): Ch 1, working strictly in Back Loop Only (BLO), 1 sc in each of the 32 sts around. Sl st to 1st sc. (32 sc).

Round 5: Ch 1, working in both loops, 1 hdc in each st around. Sl st to 1st hdc. (32 hdc).

The bootie now has vertical side walls that cup the bottom and sides of baby's foot.

Pro Tip: The BLO ridge visually separates the flat walking sole from the shoe upper and keeps the bootie standing upright.
Step 3Stitches: 21 sts remaining around ankle opening

Toe Decreases & Instep Shaping (Rounds 6-7)

Decreasing across the front toe arch to create the baby bootie instep
Step 3: Work half-double crochet decreases (hdc2tog) across front toe

Fold bootie in half lengthwise to mark the central 14 toe stitches.

Round 6: Ch 1, 1 hdc in next 9 sts. [hdc2tog] 7 times across the toe markers. 1 hdc in next 9 sts. Sl st to join. (25 sts).

Round 7: Ch 1, 1 hdc in next 9 sts. [hdc2tog] 4 times across front. 1 hdc in next 8 sts. Sl st to join. (21 sts).

The instep is now beautifully rounded and fitted over the top arch of the foot.

Pro Tip: Pull your yarn tight on each hdc2tog decrease so there are no holes over the baby's toes.
Step 4Stitches: 21 ribbed sts x 5 rounds

Elastic Ankle Ribbing & Folded Cuff (Rounds 8-13)

Crocheting the ribbed ankle cuff and folding it down over the bootie
Step 4: Alternate Front Post and Back Post double crochet to make a cozy stay-on cuff

Round 8: Ch 2 (counts as dc), work 1 dc in each st around. Sl st to top of ch-2. (21 dc).

Rounds 9 - 13: Ch 2, *Front Post dc (FPdc) around next post, Back Post dc (BPdc) around next post; rep from * around. Sl st to join.

Fasten off leaving a 6-inch tail. Weave in all yarn ends neatly on the inside.

Fold the ribbed cuff down by half over the ankle. Repeat all steps to make the matching second bootie!

Pro Tip: The FPdc/BPdc post ribbing acts like thermal elastic sock ribbing. It gently hugs the baby's ankle so the booties stay on without tight ties!

Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Clear answers to common gauge, yarn weight, and technique inquiries

Most baby booties fall off because of straight, non-elastic ankle openings. Our pattern solves this problem by using an elongated 5-round post-stitch ribbing (FPdc/BPdc). When folded over, it creates double-thickness gentle tension that hugs the ankle without constricting circulation.
