Pattern Inspiration & Design Notes
Whether you are decorating your home for the autumn season or crafting gifts for friends, this pattern was designed from the ground up for relaxation and clean, crisp stitch definition.
One of the most common frustrations in crochet is vague sizing or running out of yarn right at the final row. That is why every stitch in this tutorial has been physically crocheted, swatch-tested, and audited with our designated 5.0 mm (US H/8) hook.

Standard Swatch: 2 shell repeats x 4 rows = 4 x 4 inches (10 x 10 cm) using Classic 5-dc Shell Stitch with your designated 5.0 mm (US H/8) hook.
Important Pattern Notes
- Stitch Multiple: Foundation chain must be a multiple of 6 stitches, plus 1 for the pattern, plus 1 for the turning chain (Multiple of 6 + 2 total).
- Shell Definition: A 'shell' consists of 5 double crochets worked directly into the exact same stitch or space.
- Anchor Stitch: Every shell is anchored on both sides by a single crochet (sc), which pulls the fan downward into an elegant crest.
- Staggered Rows: In alternating rows, shells are worked directly into the center single crochet of the row below, creating an interlocking fish-scale texture.
- Decorative Scallop Border: The 1-row shell sequence (*sc, skip 2, 5 dc in next, skip 2*) can be added around any finished blanket as a border.
Step-by-Step Instructions
Step 1: Foundation Multiple & Base Anchor Points

Chain 26 loosely (multiple of 6 = 24, + 2 = 26).
Single crochet (sc) in the 2nd chain from your hook.
Skip the next 2 chains.
In the next chain, work 5 double crochets (5 dc) into that single chain space to form your very first shell fan.
Step 2: Working Alternating Shells Across Row 1

After completing your 5-dc shell, skip the next 2 chains.
Work 1 single crochet in the following chain to anchor the shell downward.
Repeat the sequence across: *skip 2 chains, 5 dc in next chain, skip 2 chains, 1 sc in next chain* across to the end of the row.
You will finish with a single crochet in the very last chain of your foundation.
Step 3: Offset Alternation for Interlocking Waves (Row 2 & Beyond)

Chain 3 and turn your work (counts as the first dc of a half-shell). Work 2 dc in the very first sc at the base of chain (3 dc total half-shell).
Skip 2 dc of the shell below, work 1 sc into the center (3rd) dc of the shell below.
Skip 2 dc, work a full 5-dc shell directly into the next single crochet anchor.
Repeat across, finishing with 3 dc (half-shell) in the final single crochet. Chain 1, turn, and work Row 3 to reset full shells.
