Important Pattern Notes
- C2C Tile Anatomy: Every individual tile consists of a [ch 3 + 3 dc] block.
- Increase Row Formula: To start a new diagonal increase row, chain 6 and work 3 dc into the 4th, 5th, and 6th chains from hook.
- Tile Connection: Join your working tile to the adjacent tile by slip stitching into its ch-3 space.
- Decreasing Formula: When reaching target width, slip stitch across the top 3 dc of the edge tile to stop expanding and create a flat 90-degree corner.
- Graphghan Pixel Mapping: In pixel blankets, 1 C2C tile = 1 pixel on a cross-stitch chart or digital pixel grid.
Step-by-Step Instructions
Step 1: Constructing Tile 1: The Ch-6 & 3-dc Base Block
Chain 6 with your 5.5mm hook.
Double crochet in the 4th chain from hook (the 3 skipped chains count as your first double crochet).
Double crochet in the 5th chain and double crochet in the 6th chain.
You have completed Tile 1 (Row 1)! You now have a solid little square block consisting of a ch-3 edge and 3 dc posts.
Step 2: Diagonal Expansion: Increasing Rows 2 & Onward
To start Row 2, chain 6 and turn your work.
Work 1 dc into the 4th, 5th, and 6th chains from hook (Tile 1 of Row 2 complete).
Rotate your work and slip stitch into the ch-3 space of the tile from Row 1.
Chain 3, and work 3 dc directly into that same ch-3 space (Tile 2 of Row 2 complete). Row 2 now has exactly 2 tiles!
Step 3: The Corner Turn: Slip-Stitch Decreasing to Finish Square
Once your piece reaches your desired width (e.g. 6 tiles wide), stop chaining 6.
Turn your work, slip stitch in each of the 3 dc of the edge tile, and slip stitch into the ch-3 space.
Chain 3 and work 3 dc into that ch-3 space as normal.
Continue across until the last tile; slip stitch into the final ch-3 space and STOP without making a new tile. Each decrease row reduces your tile count by 1 until 1 tile remains.
