- 6 Corners vs 4 Corners: Unlike a standard granny square with 4 corners, a granny hexagon has 6 corners separated by chain-2 spaces.
- Corner Formula: Every corner consists of (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) worked into the same chain-2 space.
- Side Spaces: Side spaces along each flat edge receive only 1 cluster of 3 dc, separated by a chain-1 space.
- Starting Chain 3: The initial ch-3 always counts as the first double crochet stitch of the round.
- Blocking: Hexagons benefit immensely from steam blocking or wet blocking on peg boards to sharpen the 6 symmetrical points.
Step-by-Step Instructions
Magic Ring & Round 1 Foundation
Create a magic adjustable ring with Color A.

*In next corner ch-2 space, work (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc), ch 1; repeat from * 4 more times around.
Join with sl st to top of starting ch-3. (6 double corners, 6 ch-1 side spaces).
Rounds 3 to 5 & Edge Finishing
Round 3: Sl st into corner ch-2 space. Work (ch 3, 2 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in corner. *Ch 1, 3 dc in side ch-1 space, ch 1, (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in next corner ch-2 space; repeat from * around, ending with ch 1 and sl st to starting ch-3.
Rounds 4 - 5: Repeat the established pattern. Work (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in each corner and 3 dc in each side ch-1 space.
Fasten off yarn leaving a 10-inch tail for joining motifs. Weave in starting ends cleanly with a tapestry needle.
